Architectural Specifications Writer

Job Responsibilities:

• Reviews drawings and other project information related to writing and editing specifications for wide range of project types and sizes.

• Meets with project team leaders to coordinate compliance with project requirements, institutional guidelines, Pond standards and project technical requirements along with regulations and codes.

• Experienced in developing specifications using Masterworks - AIA Master Specs, SpecsIntact - Unified Facility Guide Specification (UFGS) .

• Develops an understanding of the project design requirements and translates those requirements into specifications for materials, methods, equipment, procedures, installation, and certification testing.

• Prepare Division 00 and Division 01 procurement and contracting requirements and General Requirement sections.

• Reviews LEED scorecard and provides knowledgeable input on material product selection for LEED certification.

• Provides project budget input related to product and system value choices regarding cost versus quality.

• Performs product research; assists project designers with material selection and system research.

• Provides quality management reviews and technical advice in design development through construction document phases.

• Develops and maintains relationships with building material and systems vendors.

• Fosters a culture of external and internal client service.


• Assists Project Managers with review and coordination of project agreements relative to professional service and general condition issues.

• Function as a technical leader and active member of the office.

• When requested, assists Project Architects with shop drawing and product substitution review as it relates to specification requirements.

• Coordinates and reviews all disciplines technical specifications for consistency.

• Maintains technical resource library and list of technical resource contacts.

• Archives technical files related to project.

• May conduct internal specifications training.

• Participates in developing and improving document standards and best practice procedures as it relates to construction documents drawings and specifications.

• Participate in leading continuing education in topics of construction trends, standards and materials.

Job Qualifications:

• Proven knowledge of architectural design, engineering coordination, building material and systems, products and trends.

• Proven knowledge of construction procedures and schedules.

• Proven knowledge of building envelope components and material requirements of public, private and department of defense building and facility types.

• Strong knowledge of building codes and ability to research and apply/incorporate into technical documents.

• Strong knowledge of sustainability, high performance design and LEED guidelines.

• Knowledge in writing specifications for Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission (GSFIC) is a plus.

• Proficiency in specifications software programs such as Masterworks and SpecsIntact.

• Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Proficiency in Newforma.

• Ability to produce a coordinated and integrated Project Manual.

• Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and produce within deadlines.

• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.


• Bachelor’s degree in architecture or engineering or equivalent in education or experience required.

• 7 years in architectural practice with prior experience in specifications development.

• Licensed Architect with current license is a plus.

• NCARB registration is a plus.

• LEED credentials is a plus. If not, becoming LEED AP certified is required within 8 months of employment. • Construction Specifications Institute Certification is a plus. If not becoming CSI certified is required within 8 months of employment.
